Vimy Ridge :: essays research papers
It was at Vimy, in 1917, that all four Divisions of the Canadian Corps attacked simultaneously for the first time, about 100,000 men taking part in the battle. Vimy Ridge was an important part of the Germans' defenses, barring the way to the mines and factories in the Douai plain, which had been of great use to them in their continuation of the war. The very nature of the Ridge gave it strong, built-in defense, but these natural defenses had been supplemented by strong points, elaborate trench-systems and underground tunnels linking natural caves. All previous Allied attempts to capture the Ridge had failed, and there was a strong body of opinion among the Allied commanders that the Ridge was possibly impregnable and incapable of ever being taken by a direct attack. à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à Preparations for the battle were thorough and extremely detailed. Behind their lines, the Canadians built a full-scale replica of the ground over which their troops would have to attack, giving all units the chance to practice their attacking movements and so understand what they (and neighboring units) were expected to do on the day. Regular reconnaissance patrols, assisted by information gathered from aerial photography, meant that records of changes to the German defenses on the Ridge were always up-to-date. Tunnellers dug ââ¬Å"subterraneanâ⬠passages under the Ridge - a total of five kilometers in all on four levels - allowing the attacking troops to move close to their jumping-off positions in some safety. Once the battle had begun, these same tunnels allowed the wounded to be brought back under cover and also provided unseen and safe lines of communications.à à à à à à à à à à The Infantry attack was preceded by a powerful artillery bombardment, which lasted almost three weeks, involving about 1,000 guns, including huge, 15-inch howitzers. For the first two weeks, some guns were not fired at all, so that the Germans would not be able to locate their positions but eventually, these guns joined in the bombardment, too. Although the shelling was aimed at the German trenches and defensive positions on the Ridge, the Canadians also shelled enemy batteries. They had become adept at locating German gun-positions and had identified the positions of 80 per cent of them. à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à April 9th. 1917 - Easter Monday - dawned cold, with freezing rain and sleet. The ground conditions were very bad, with slippery mud waiting for hamper the Canadians as they began their assault. Heavily laden, the men began to cross the shattered No-Man's Land, skirting as best they could the shell-holes and craters, until they came to the muddy, slippery slopes of the Ridge itself.

Heroes Robert Cormier Atmosphere and Mood Essay
Francis has entered LaSalleââ¬â¢s tenement with the intentions of killing LaSalle. Francis is very quick to declare the reason for his presence at Larryââ¬â¢s tenement. Ever since Francis came back from the war, killing Larry is all Francis has wanted to accomplish. ââ¬ËSay your prayersâ⬠¦ I rehearsed those words so many times through the years.ââ¬â¢ Straight away we see this sense of determination within Francis. Francis has been ââ¬Ërehearsingââ¬â¢ this moment ever since Larry raped Nicole. Heââ¬â¢s been waiting for LaSalleââ¬â¢s return to Frenchtown for ââ¬Ëyearsââ¬â¢ so that he can seek revenge. Here Cormier creates a sense of violence and tension. ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢ve decided to aim for the heartââ¬â¢ Francisââ¬â¢ thoughts towards Larry are quite violent and he wishes to ââ¬Ëshatter his heart the way he broke Nicoleââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢. Francis wants nothing but revenge and intends to attain it. Cormierââ¬â¢s use of Similes is very clever . Francis wants to do physically what Larry did to them mentally. Despite Larryââ¬â¢s horrific character, he knows Francis very well. Larry knows that no matter how angry Francis is, he will never be able to physically murder someone. Larry ââ¬Ëwithdraws a pistolââ¬â¢ knowing that Francis wonââ¬â¢t be able to fulfil his ââ¬Ëmissionââ¬â¢. The pistol was a ââ¬Ërelic from the warââ¬â¢; it seems as if everything bad that happened in Francisââ¬â¢ life lies right there in that tenement. ââ¬ËLeave me here, leaver everything hereâ⬠¦ leave it all behind with meââ¬â¢ We can see how quickly the mood changes, from Francisââ¬â¢ violent words to Larryââ¬â¢s words of comfort. Francis ââ¬Ësuddenly wants go get out of thereââ¬â¢ he wants no part in Larry anymore and the ââ¬Ëaroma of the soup is sickening and the tenement is too warm.ââ¬â¢ Cormier creates a rather nauseating atmosphere; Larryââ¬â¢s tenement is a place no one would want to be in. ââ¬ËThe sound of a pistol cracks the air.ââ¬â¢ The theme of innocence runs throughout the whole book, just like the world innocence was shattered by the war and Nicoles innocence was shattered by Larry, Frenchtown is now also shat tered by a ââ¬Ëpistol shotââ¬â¢ cracking the air.

Puritanism essays
Puritanism essays The discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus brought many changes through out the European continent. Many nations seized the opportunity in hopes of improving their economies and expanding their territory through out the Americas. For the English in particular, it led to settlement and eventually colonization of much of the Eastern American coast. From the time of settlement, New England and the Chesapeake, both colonies of English origin had developed rather differently and had formed distinct societies by 1700. The variations in development of these colonies occurred because of the differences in the religious ideals and social structure. The Puritans, one of the first group settlers in New England, strived to create a society that was based on their religion. They tried to lead useful and hard-working lives and attributed all their successes to God. Through the religious ideals, the clergy and the government were intertwined and worked with each other to maintain the piety and the creation of a close-knit Christian society (Doc. A). This society was based so much on religion that it also helped resolve many problems that would occur. Many economical problems of the time were solved by assessing the morality of it according to Christian ideals (Doc. E). The Christian religion was so important that no other religion was allowed to practice in New England. People of different views on religion than the Puritans were asked to conform or leave the area. The Chesapeake settlers, however, were the least concerned with establishing a society that emphasized religious ideals. They were very secular and were primarily conce rned with economical gain. For example, in Maryland the Calverts allowed all Christian people to practice the faith, regardless of denomination. The reason for this was more economical than religious: to attract settlers to occupy land, therefore increasing profits. Many of the problems that rose due to eithe...

Moral Ambiguity of Charlie in The Little Drummer Girl In George J. Lennardââ¬â¢s, ââ¬Å"John le Carreâ⬠critical assessment of the ending of Little Drummer Girl, he claims that ââ¬Å"Charlie can not continue to act in the theater of the real...she can no longer return to the romantic fluff of Western middle class society.â⬠Charlieââ¬â¢s last line in the novel, the theater of the real, are ââ¬Å"I am deadâ⬠(pp.659), which confirms Lennardââ¬â¢s statement. By playing upon Charlieââ¬â¢s insecurities and her need for acceptance, this scheme forms a kind of moral ambiguity and uncertainness inside Charlie. When it ends, her world is shattered, and she becomes ââ¬Å"deadâ⬠in a figurative sense. The theater of the real forces Charlie to give a performance of a lifetime as her own life is at stake. In the beginning Charlie, willing and naive, accepts the script given to her by Joseph. The characters names change almost as frequently as Charlieââ¬â¢s views of her situation. The changing names give way to the belief that the characters, under disguise, can not really be held responsible for their actions as they are in costume. History and cultural context of two significant buildings of the same Essay
History and cultural context of two significant buildings of the same typology - Essay Example Fig 1. Aerial view of the Imperial War Museum North Courtesy of www.wabbaviation.co.uk Cultural conditions The Second World War which began in 1939 and ended in 1945 had a major impact on society and the lives of people. The war saw several people from different countries die and countless others maimed. The destruction of property and infrastructure that resulted from the modern war is practically beyond description. Today, memories of the Second World War and its effects remain etched in the minds of many people who lived at the time of the conflict. Although many people living in the U.K. today never witnessed the war, they have an opportunity to see its effects by visiting the Imperial War Museum North, one of the five braches of the Imperial War Museum (David 2002). The Trafford Park area in which the Imperial War Museum North is located played host to several factories including those that produced Avro Lancaster heavy bombers and engines that were used in combat aircraft owned by the British government. The museum building is situated in an area that was a major industrial centre during World War Two (Sophie 2009). During the Manchester Blitz that occurred in 1940, the industrial centre was heavily bombarded by enemy forces. The Museum was established in the area hence to display the impacts of modern wars on society and people (David 2002). The museum contains displays of several artifacts that were used during the Second World War including a 13-pounder field gun, Russian T-34 tank, and U.S. AV-8B Harrier jet. The museum is a major attraction in London with tourists and scholars being its main customers. Given its design and the additional features that it has, many people find the place interesting. This is coupled by the fact that the museum features different media which suits various interests. Design Principles and Theories The Imperial War Museum North building takes the untraditional form of a globe that has been reassembled after being shattere d into pieces (Libeskind 2012). The building is formed by three interlocking fragments that represent water, air and earth. These three make concrete the wars that rocked the 20th century with men and women participating in the conflicts with the sea, sky, and land being the settings upon which the wars took place. Better stated, the building is formed by three shards of space that interlock to form a constellation (Libeskind 2012). The open, earthly sphere of the war is represented by the Earth Shard. On the other hand, the Water Shard is the platform upon which the Canal can be viewed. This shard also contains a cafe, restaurant, performance space and deck. Yet again, the Air Shard which leads into the museum is stringed with observatories, education spaces and projected images. Owing to financial constraints, the original design of the museum building was altered and a number of features excluded in the actual construction (Sophie 2009). The auditorium for example was removed and the exhibition content altered. The permanent exhibitions of the museum are featured in the main gallery space in the Earth Shardââ¬â¢s first floor. The exhibitions are displayed chronologically around the gallery that covers a perimeter of about 200 meters, and feature six thematic displays (Sophie 2009). The floor of the gallery is curved in shape and looks like the earthââ¬â¢s curvature from an imaginary north pole. The design of the mus

How to find a good job Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
How to find a good job - Essay Example I believe that following a few easy rules will help everyone to become successful in their search for a proper job. To begin with, letââ¬â¢s find out what a ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠job means. For most people the best position is the one with the highest salary. But do not be confused by this global delusion. A real ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠job should be a combination of 3 most important factors: money, pleasure and time consumption. To be more persuasive I would like to illustrate you some examples. Imagine that you have successfully found a well-paid job, but it just does not suit your preferences. If a person does not like what he or she is doing, than he or she will not be dedicated to the job, they will not fulfill it properly and, in the end, they might get fired. Now think about another situation. You were lucky to find a well-paid job that you really enjoy doing. But the problem is that it takes all your spare time and you do not have any opportunity simply to have a rest. After first few weeks of such intense work you will be tired and exhausted and will think about leaving such a job. Furthermore, a ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠job should imply career growth. We are all mature people and everyone should think about future prospects when choosing a job. All the pains and dedication at work must be rewarded somehow, and the best way to do this is promotion. So, a proper job is also the one that ensures encouragement and stimulation in a form of career growth. Now, as we have figured out what a ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠job is, it is time to hunt for it. You should be aware that we all live in a world of extreme competition. Job market is pretty severe and we do not have a choice, except for adjusting to its tough conditions. Even if you are a good and skilled professional, an employer will not come and knock at your door one day with an offer of a wonderful job position. You will have to search for it yourself, attend dozens of job

Ethics and Morality in the Health Professions Essay
Ethics and Morality in the Health Professions - Essay Example If at all God created every creature, then why should one think of taking his or her life away. It would be quite unethical in my career to leave such an individual to die when I knew in real sense that he or she was going to die. The only way that one could tell if someone else has feelings for suicide, could be through a conversation where he or she will confess such feelings. It was the right step undertaken by a patient who required suicidal assistance to approach you Dr. Deborah. It is quite true that a suicidal person who locks him or herself away tends to feel isolation and for that matter, they may end up attempting suicide without the knowledge of his or her friends and relatives. If at all Dr. Brody you would put yourself in the patientââ¬â¢s shoe, then you would not imagine that someone wishes you to take your life away. In most countries in the west, suicide has significantly shown that it is the foremost cause of death (Gutheil 29). These countries spend anonymous amo unt of money in maintenance of safety on roads but unaware on suicide and its prevention. It is the best option for a country to engage into campaigns on choices to make good life. A person who wants to attempt suicide or has feelings or thoughts of suicide, it is then quite evident that such individuals have symptoms to indicate that they can no more cope up with life. It is repeatedly as a result of series of events or cases that make somebody overwhelmed in distress or trauma. There is no doubt that this patient wanted you to be available in order to listen to him or her and feel about what he or she could be experiencing in life. A problem talked about in my view, sometimes creates a road map towards fundamental solutions. All doctors and even nurses for that matter have no substantial grounds to ignore their patients who request for assistance in suicide. It could be quite unethical if we rather allowed and assist patients to die. When anyone demands for help to die, such a req uest should enhance discussions to ascertain the reasoning of the patient through needs assessment with no grounds of judgment. Therefore Dr. Deborah, it would be my advice that you should not hesitate to assist. Acknowledge this request and oppose the inclination to abandon or ignore the dialogue. Listen to the patient and even more and establish a contract of no-suicide. Ask the patient to make a promise that he or she will eradicate such feelings of suicide. Such issues should be taken seriously to extend that if the patient appears acutely suicidal; endorse him or her under care in the hospital department of emergency. It would be also important to seek opinions from psychologists, counselors and psychiatrists. It is a question that most doctors should continuously ask themselves why people attempt suicide. People who want to avoid emotional pain that is unbearable normally result into suicide (Gutheil 40-42). It is therefore a task ahead of you Dr. Debora Brody to help your pat ient look for better choices that will enable him or her to think critically and analyze every situation in life. Why I would give such an advice to Dr. Brody is a decision that I fundamentally consider. I believe that life is such a precious thing that one should be neither denied nor think of taking it away. Suicide can not be the last option because death does not solve our worst experiences. One would think that it would be the end of our pains. I would not deny that painful life ends at the grave but
